Powell Dental Office Implements New Technology for Bone Grafting

  • December 31, 2015

POWELL, OHIO – Two Powell dentists have recently adopted a new technology that uses the patient’s own extracted teeth for immediate bone grafts.

Drs. Neal Patel and Louai Salaita, of Infinite Smiles, often use bone grafting for patients who need dental implants to replace missing teeth. Infinite Smiles recently added the Smart Dentin Grinder to provide necessary bone grafts. The equipment simplifies treatment, requires less chair time, reduces treatment cost and allows faster recovery time.

“Tooth extraction is one of the most widely performed procedures in dentistry, and it has been well documented that it often results in changes in the shape of the bone below the gums,” said Dr. Patel, who operates Infinite Smiles. “The resulting deformity can be an obstacle to aesthetic and functional results, and cause challenges for tooth replacement via dental implants and other prosthetics.”

Smart Dentin Grinder cleans, demineralizes and sterilizes the freshly extracted tooth to make bacteria-free mineralized dentin for immediate grafting.

Dr. Patel said studies show that extracted teeth, when prepared, make excellent bone grafting material to fill in the holes left in the bone after tooth extraction. Traditional bone grafting cannot be conducted immediately following the extraction. With immediate bone grafting, the patient can have dental implants to replace their missing teeth.

“In most cases, our patients come to us having done their research. They know the standard steps to expect in extracting and replacing their teeth,” Dr. Patel said. “What they often don’t realize is that we can do this all in one visit. They leave pleasantly surprised that their procedure is much further along than they thought it would be after just one visit.”

Infinite Smiles offers services in general dentistry, restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, smile makeovers, full-mouth rehabilitations, immediate-load dental implants, same-day crowns, short-term orthodontics and noninvasive gum treatments.

Dr. Patel, who grew up in a family of physicians, combines his passion for medical science, visual arts and computer technology in his dentistry. He earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular genetics and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University. Following dental school, Dr. Patel trained with the world’s leading dentists and instructors. He completed his prosthodontics fellowship at The Ohio State University by training with world-renowned prosthodontist Dr. McGlumphy and studied under Dr. Lorenzo Vanni, one of the world’s foremost authorities on neuromuscular dentistry.

Before launching his own practice in 2008, Dr. Patel also worked to educate oral surgeons on 3-D imaging and computer-assisted implant surgery. He continues to serve as an instructor and travels across the world to teach thousands of dentists every year in the latest dental technology.

At Infinite Smiles, Dr. Patel developed a system that uses CAD/CAM and cone beam computed tomography to map out dental procedures and give patients a virtual look at their new smile. When these technologies are used together, Dr. Patel can easily transfer the information to the patient, producing results within one tenth of a millimeter.

Infinite Smiles can provide patients with new, permanent teeth in just one day. Dr. Patel places the implants and completes the restoration in-house instead of having patients schedule multiple visits with various offices. The Powell dental office includes a state-of-the-art dental lab and a ceramist who is a certified Master of Dental Technology.

As an instructor in dental technology and best implant practices, Dr. Patel has been published and featured in several clinical articles, scholarly journals and news publications, including Forbes, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, The Journal of the American Dental Association, Dental Entrepreneur and Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry. From 2011 to 2015, Dr. Patel was voted Top Dentist by his peers and featured in Columbus Monthly Magazine. He received the Early Career Achievement Award from The Ohio State University Alumni Association and is the beauty expert for New Beauty Magazine.
