What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a dental restoration that looks just like a real tooth and is used to cover up a damaged tooth and restore its function and strength. We place dental crowns over broken teeth, teeth with large cavities, and teeth that have had root canals. We also restore dental implants with crowns.

At our office, we offer CEREC same-day crowns. Using the latest technology and tools, we are able to make your custom restorations right here in our office! Gone are the days of ugly metal crowns, long waits on dental labs, and uncomfortable temporary crowns. Our iTero digital impressions take the time and mess out of planning, while our CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) system allows us to create your crown with unmatched precision.

After we take the impressions of your teeth and mouth, we’ll upload the images to our computer. With the aid of CAD/CAM (computer assisted design/computer assisted manufacturing), Dr. Patel will digitally design your crowns and make any necessary adjustments for size, shape, and color. Then, he will send the digital model to a milling machine in our office (inLab MC X5 machine for complicated cases). Using a block of ceramic, the machine will produce your perfectly fitting crown while you wait! The whole process takes only 1 to 1 ½ hours and is much less invasive than the procedure for metal crowns.

In order to fit the crown over your tooth, we will first remove a portion of that tooth. Then, after we take impressions and create your crown, we will cement it to your tooth. You will be able to walk out of our office confident in your renewed smile!

A dental bridge, which is a series of crowns, is a fixed appliance used to bridge the gap left by a lost tooth or multiple missing teeth. The bridge helps patients maintain their facial structure, keeps healthy teeth from moving, and restores a patient’s ability to speak and chew. We are able to use our CEREC technology to create the crowns that make up your custom-fit bridge. We design and craft each bridge in-house, ensuring a quicker turnaround time than the weeks it would take an outside lab to create your restoration.

In order to place your bridge, Dr. Patel will file down the healthy teeth that will be used to support the permanent restoration. After preparing your teeth, we will take impressions for our lab to create your bridge. In no time, you’ll be back in the office for your final restoration.

Because bridges require us to remove part of your healthy teeth, we typically recommend dental implants over bridges. Implants also prevent jawbone deterioration because they restore the chewing force to your jaw, which strengthens and builds up your bone. Bridges do not have this ability. With proper care, however, they are able to provide many years of beautiful smiles as well as improve your ability to chew and talk.

To determine if you are a good candidate for a bridge, Dr. Patel will meet with you first and discuss your tooth replacement options, including implants. If a bridge is the best option for you, we are happy to improve your smile with this restoration.
