Have you been suffering from persistent migraines and headaches but with no diagnosis from your doctor? Without a diagnosis, you’re stuck trying to deal with either the pain or the symptoms through pain relievers. There are many causes for chronic head pain, but one that’s often overlooked is oral related. If you don’t have an answer for the cause of your chronic headaches, come see the doctors at Infinite Smiles.   One of the main causes of oral-related headaches is bruxism. Bruxism is the act of grinding or clenching your teeth, often at night while you sleep. Many people grind and clench their teeth as a reaction to stress. In turn, this constant act of grinding can cause severe pain in the jaw (TMJ pain) and facial muscles — hence, your morning headaches and migraines.

Other dental causes of persistent headaches include malocclusion, or bad bite. If you have a bad bite from a poorly aligned jaw or uneven, misaligned teeth, you may be forced to constantly reposition your jaw every time you eat and speak. This can cause stress on your jaw that in turn can contribute to headaches.

Using our state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including digital X-rays, CBCT scans, and Anatomage 3D software, Dr. Patel can get an incredibly detailed look at your facial structure. To measure the health of your jaw joint and other facial muscles — especially if bruxism is to blame for your headaches — he may also use the BioPAK computerized evaluation aid. With this information, as well as other evaluation methods and questionnaires, Dr. Patel can determine what is triggering your headaches.

Our BioPAK evaluation shows how the position of your jaw is affecting your bite. When your jaw muscles and joints are not in tandem with your teeth and bite, the problem can cause unnatural wear and tear on your teeth or even destroy restorations. The BioPAK tool helps us find the most ideal spot for your jaw muscles and joints. Once we find that location, we’ll fashion an oral appliance to move your jaw into a more appropriate position.

If your headaches are triggered by intense teeth grinding or clenching, you may find relief with a biteguard. A biteguard, also known as a nightguard, is a custom oral appliance that we create to stabilize your teeth and reposition your jaw. This allows the biteguard to prevent bruxism and also help correct a bad bite and the resulting headaches. Our NTI-tss appliance is made of clear acrylic resin and designed to fit over your teeth in a way that prevents your upper and lower back teeth from touching. Without these teeth being able to touch, they can’t clench or grind together to produce headaches.
