TMJ treatment

Dr. Patel is very experienced in relieving chronic jaw pain. He can identify the cause of your pain, diagnose TMD, and reverse your pain with TMJ treatment solutions.

What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is, most simply, your jaw joint. It is the joint that allows you to open and close your mouth. And because of this, its health and function are very important.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMD, refers to a number of potential issues that can affect the jaw joint. Specifically, joint stiffness, weakness, or tension. And from here, it can lead to severe jaw pain and other symptoms. Typically, TMD results from a misaligned jaw joint. Or, where the joint and surrounding muscles have problems working properly.

Undiagnosed facial pain and chronic headaches and migraines can be undoubtedly debilitating. But, it takes a knowledgeable health professional to diagnose TMD properly. If you suffer from jaw pain, Infinite Smiles has the solutions you need to live comfortably.

TMJ pain symptoms

Symptoms of TMD include face, neck, shoulder, or back pain, clicking or popping in your jaw joints, or lockjaw. You could also have discomfort when chewing or headaches or migraines, especially after waking up.

This pain could come from trauma to your face or jaw or from grinding and clenching your teeth (bruxism). You may even notice worn-down teeth or broken restorations from teeth grinding or trauma.

TMD diagnosis

As with any dental ailment, delaying preventative treatment for teeth grinding or TMJ pain can result in losing your teeth.

Fortunately, we can painlessly diagnose TMD with computerized diagnostic tools. These tools measure the health or your jaw joints and facial muscles in approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

The evaluation helps Dr. Patel determine the correct position for your jaw. Finding the correct jaw position can both eliminate discomfort and boost facial aesthetics.

Non-surgical TMJ treatment

Some patients grind or clench their teeth at night. In this case, our office can make a custom nightguard to reposition your jaw and relieve your pain. We can also create daytime NTI-tss™ splints to keep your jaw in the right position and relieve headaches.

Our guards are custom made in our lab from high-strength polymer and can be made in just 2 10-minute appointments.

Further, Dr. Patel can administer Botox® to relieve TMJ pain. Botox® is an FDA-approved, non-surgical injection that is traditionally used to temporarily smooth facial lines and wrinkles. Because Botox® is a muscle relaxer, we use it as a form of TMJ treatment, as well.
